Empower signs PPA for Rwandan run-of-river project

Impact fund manager Empower New Energy has signed a PPA for the 1.9MW Rucanzogera run-of-river hydropower plant in eastern Rwanda with the state-owned Rwanda Energy Group. Empower will become an equity investor in the $7.9 million project together with developers Rwanda-based Travaux d’Ingenierie Generale du Rwanda (TIGER) and Malthe Winje. The project has been awarded €0.5 ($0.55 million) won a EUR 0.5 million (USD 0.55m) grant from Nordic Development Fund's Energy and Environment Partnership for Africa fund. The Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation is also granting the project funds for concept development, transfer of knowledge and cost sharing for construction of needed local infrastructure.
