IDB Invest is providing a local currency loan of BRL200 million (about $37 million) to the Israelita Albert Einstein Hospital, in Sao Paulo, to finance its investments and expenditure in the fight against COVID-19 in Brazil.

The operation allows Israelita Albert Einstein Hospital to finance long-term investments made during the pandemic, with the aim of bolstering its financial strength and continuing with investment plans in the health sector, both in public and private hospitals.

Additionally, the financing supports the growth of its service capacity and scope, during and after the pandemic, helping to mitigate the impact of the spread of the virus in Sao Paulo and to extend its services to lower-income communities.

The response plan has made it possible to increase the care capacity in the public sector by 528 beds, reaching a total capacity of 951 beds for patients with COVID-19. In the private sector, capacity was expanded to 108 beds in the Intensive Care Unit and 49 hospital beds. IDB Invest resources have also been used to pay expenses related to the development of diagnostic tests for COVID-19, based on next generation sequencing.

The increase in hospital capacity includes: the expansion of the installed capacity of the two public hospitals of the Unified Health System  operated by Einstein (M'Boi Mirim Hospital and Vila Santa Catarina Hospital); the Emergency Care Unit of the Campo Limpo Hospital, the instalation of two field hospitals (Pacaembu Field Hospital and Morumbi Unit), and pre-selection and assistance units at the Vila Santa Catarina Municipal Hospital and Campo Limpo Municipal Hospital.
