The World Bank, through its subsidiary the International Development Association (IDA), has agreed a $500 million loan for the sustainable development of Kinshasa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo capital.

The financing will support the implementation of the Kinshasa Multi-Sectoral Development and Urban Resilience Project, which will improve basic services such as water, sanitation, solid waste and energy.

This includes building new water treatment plants, sludge treatment facilities, upgrading the water supply network, developing a landfill, building a transfer station, developing off-grid electricity facilities and improving street lighting. The World Bank says more than two million people, 51% of whom are women, will directly benefit from improved services, such as connecting households to water, reducing exposure to flooding and creating urban green spaces in the neighbourhoods of Kisenso, Ndjili, Matete, and Lemba.
