New Victorian government outlines rail projects for region
The re-elected Victorian Government has announced plans to improve the region's rail network. The Suburban Rail Loop project will encircle Melbourne and build up to 12 new underground train stations to link to every existing major suburban and regional line. The State will invest an initial A$300 million ($218 million) in a full business case, planning and pre-construction works.
Victoria also announced that it will match the A$5 billion commitment by the Federal Government towards the construction of the Melbourne Airport Rail Link.
