Japan pledges $1.1bn of loans for Myanmar projects

The Japanese government is set to grant loans totalling JPY120.9 billion ($1.1 billion) to Myanmar for four infrastructure developments. There is a JPY24 billion loan for improvements to the Yangon Circular Railway Road that will provide better drainage and reduced congestion. JPY45.9 billion is to be used for sewerage system development in Yangon, where new sewer pipes will be installed. Upgrades will be made to waste water treatment plants, providing around seven times the current treatment capacity by 2030. JPY12.2 billion has been allocated to the development of power distribution networks in Yangon and Mandalay. And finally, JPY38.6 billion will finance improvements to infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and electricity and water supplies in Chin, Rakhine, Mon, Kayin, and Tanintharyi.
