AFD announces financing for COVID-19 fight in 16 African countries
The French Development Agency (AFD) is to finance six new projects worth a total of €12 million to help 16 African countries combat the COVID-19 pandemic. Another 14 projects are expected to receive further support soon, AFD said.
The projects are:
A €2.2 million grant to support a project for pandemic action research and establishment of the African response to the COVID-19 pandemic in Benin, Cameroon, Ghana, Guinea, Democratic Republic of Congo and Senegal.
Financing of €2 million for an epidemiological surveillance and alert network in the Indian Ocean, involving Indian Ocean Commission member states: Madagascar, Mauritius, the Union of the Comoros, Seychelles.
Support worth €2 million for Institut Pasteur in Africa for rapid COVID-19 testing, involving Niger, Senegal, Guinea, the Central African Republic, Madagascar.
The Reinforcement of COVID-19 diagnostic capacities in seven countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali, Niger, Senegal, and Togo. The grant amount of €1.5 million comes after an initial amount of €8 million was awarded in July 2019.
A grant amount of €2 million - in addition to €15 million of financing awarded in December 2019 - for emergency support for hospitals in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
And a €2 million grant to reinforce of African Health Ministries' capacity to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic in Senegal, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central Africa Republic and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
