Norway-based SN Power is conducting feasibility studies for the $705 million 735MW Middle Yeywa hydropower PPP in Myanmar, with more activity expected in the coming months towards 2021.

The project, an arch dam with a capacity up to 635,000m3, will be under a BOT model. The Myanmar government has signed an agreement with the sponsor to co-develop the project located on the Myitnge river in Shan State.  Construction is scheduled to take about six years.

SN Power in 2014 signed an MoU with Myanmar’s Ministry of Electricity and Energy (MoEE) and the project company will sell electricity to MoEE's Electrical Power Generation Enterprise, which will then distribute supply to different regions.

Other companies involved in the project include: Sweden-based Poyry (now renamed to Afry) – pre-feasibility; Norway-based Multiconsult – environmental and social impact assessment (EIA and SIA); Myanmar Institute for Integrated Development – EIA and SIA; Myanmar-based National Engineering and Planning Services – EIA and SIA; and King & Spalding (legal).

The IFC in 2018 partnered with MoEE and Myanmar's Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation for the strategic environmental assessment of the hydropower sector in Myanmar.
