Ethiopia launches RFP for telecom tenders

Ethiopia has issued RFPs for two telecoms licenses, with the deadline for bids set for 5 March 2021. However, the deadline to show an interest in receiving the RFP documents is 10 December.

The initial licence term will run for at least 15 years, with the option of renewal thereafter. There will also be a range of spectrum available across multiple frequency bands, between 800 MHz to 2600 MHz.

The Ethiopian Communications Authority (ECA) lunched the expression of interest stat in May this year, and the 12 EoIswere received in June. Bidding firms include Axian; Electromecha International Projects; Etisalat; Kandu Global Telecommunications; Liquid Telecom; MTN; Orange; Saudi Telecom Company; Snail Mobile; Telkom SA; and Vodafone, Vodacom, Safaricom (Global Partnership for Ethiopia).

The RFP is open and not limited to firms that submitted EoIs. The ECA is overseeing the licence issuance process and the IFC was appointed the transaction adviser to the Ethiopian authority in January this year.
