Mauricio Claver-Carone is elected as IADB president

Region:
Americas

Mauricio Claver-Carone has been elected as president of the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB). He becomes the first US citizen to lead the bank and will take office on 1 October, 2020, for a five-year term. He succeeds current President Luis Alberto Moreno.

Claver-Carone - Donald Trump's nominee - is currently deputy assistant to the US President and senior director for Western Hemisphere Affairs at the US National Security Council. He previously served as US representative to the International Monetary Fund and as senior advisor to the Under Secretary for International Affairs at the US Department of the Treasury.

Diplomats from several Latin American and European countries had tried to delay the vote, hoping to push the decision into next year when a new US president could be in office. For its six decades, the bank’s presidency was held by a Latin American national.
