AIIB joins financing for $151m Maldives WTE plant

The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has approved a $40 million loan for the $151.13 million Greater Malé Waste-to-Energy Project in the Maldives.

The project involves the construction of a a waste treatment facility using waste-to-energy technology and disposal infrastructure with an expected capacity of 500 tpd, two treatment lines of 250 tonnes per day each, an 8MW electricity surplus energy recovery facility, an air pollution control system, and a landfill for safe disposal of air pollution control residues and non-marketable incineration bottom ash.  

The Government of Maldives will contribute $27.74 million to the total cost, while the Asian Development Bank has previousy approved financing for the project. The Japan Fund for the Joint Crediting Mechanism will provide a $10 million grant to finance expenditures related to WTE design and construction, contingencies, and consulting services for the certification of greenhouse gas emission reduction from the WTE plant.
